Democracy Is More Important Than Party

Democracy Is More Important

The Republican and Democratic parties need to be reminded that democracy is more important than party, or who becomes President.

Right now… We have a Republican Senate that won’t allow evidence in a trial. We have a Democratic Party that changes, mid-stream, the rules for joining a debate. They are behaving like nothing more than self-interested elites.

The Great American Experiment

Party leaders need to be reminded of what makes the United States unique or great in any way: DEMOCRACY. The United States is the first country in the world that began as a democracy. Thus, the United States was/is called “The Great American Experiment.” The hypothesis was/is that a government can effectively function, and thrive — without ruling elites!

Is it possible for a Government to be permanently maintained without privileged classes… and without either hereditary or self-appointed rulers? Is the democratic principle of equal rights, general suffrage, and government by a majority, capable of being carried into practical operation…?

~ New-York Daily Tribune, November 27, 1860 (just months before the American Civil War began)

The Power of the People

The majority of American People don’t give a Flying-Fig about the careers or personal ambitions of establishment party leaders (would-be members of a Ruling Elite). Contrary to popular D.C. opinion, in which the President’s Administration constitutes the nation, the citizens of the United States consider The People to be our nation. ALL the people (which kindly includes current White House residents and Members of Congress).

Despite low points throughout 250 years of American history, The People remain a democracy. We are ready, willing, and able to quash the power of would-be Ruling Elites.

WE… Stand up. Protest. Exert power. Vote them out. Reform the system. Restore democracy. We revolutionize again, again, and again. We clean it up — wash, and repeat — as often as necessary. We make our country stronger, and more beautiful, than ever. WE ARE the First Democratic Nation.

  1. Joann, I agree the impeachment of the president was more about our democracy than party. To be frank, it matters not who it benefits or does not benefit, we cannot have a president who is acting the way this one acts. He is every bit as guilty as believed and more. Plus, he has dragged a lot of other folks into this mess. The Senate has grounds to remove him from office, but the GOP is too scared of this person.

This 61 year-old independent and former GOP (and Dem) voter believes Donald Trump is the most corrupt and untruthful president in my lifetime and that includes Richard Nixon who was a crook. But, none of this is new. Thomas Wells, an attorney who worked for Trump for years, wrote in 2016 “Donald Trump lies everyday, even about things of no consequence.” Under oath, Michael Cohen, his attorney and fixer, said “Donald Trump is a racist, he is a con-artist and he is a cheat.” Of course, five Trump biographers all said Trump has a hard time with the truth.

So, taking Trump at his word, is a fool’s errand. It is sad to say this about the president of the US, but I urge people to confirm anything he says or tweets. It is probably untrue or exaggerated. Further, our allies see him for what he is as 63% of Europeans feel Trump is untrustworthy, a lower ranking than Putin and X, per a recent Pew survey.

The GOP Senators may be opening Pandora’s box and they will not be able to put the president back in the box. How will they be able to rein in Pandora as more transgressions come out next week, the week after, the month after….Keith

    1. Thank you, Keith. It’s the truth. And now, it’s up to The People to curb a corrupt system. Nonviolently, of course — we’ll need to protest, strike, and demonstrate en masse to halt further assaults on our democracy and to restore it. No more enabling leaders who’ve lost their compass.

  2. Totally disgusted at the gutlessness of the GOP senators. Putting their own place in power before the constitution, the American people, and common morality. What did Trump say in the last election about clearing the swamp????

    1. Yes, the GOP Senate is truly deplorable. But most politicians elected to national US office learn to “work the system.” Some of them, love that corrupt system more than others. They don’t give a flying-fig about American ideals. Of course, they pretend to have principles — while employing every ego defense mechanism in Freud’s handbook — projection, rationalization, denial, etc. The lies and self-gratifying agendas are, as you note, disgusting. Utterly disgusting. Thank you for your empathy, dear British cousin.

  3. Hi JoAnn:
I will be honest. I’m afraid that selling the progressive issues will not create enough of a coalition for them to win the Presidency ie. Bernie Sanders – Please tell me something I am missing.

  4. The DNC is systematically trying to cheat Bernie out of the nomination. Yes, Trump is horrible, but the Democratic Party leadership is by far the most corrupt of the two parties. At least the Republican Party allows an honest vote by its members.

Rumor is that there is one precinct in Iowa whose results still haven’t been reported because they would make Bernie the state delegate equivalent (SDE) winner too, the weird standard for “winning” Iowa.

    1. Agreed. Didn’t hear about rumor, but would NOT be surprised.

Bloomberg is a sham candidate. He’s meant to block Bernie. To the DNC, that is more important than beating Trump.

I think/hope people are waking up to the current state of American politics.

      1. Absolutely! Beating Trump will be easy compared to getting a fair primary from the DNC.

If Bernie is cheated out of the nomination, Mike Figuerado says we should burn down the Dem Party by never voting for a Democrat again, ever, in any race. I agree. We can form a new party.
